Sacré-Cœu

Musée Louvre, Sacré-Cœur & La Place de l'Artiste

. August 14, 2014 .

Typically on our first full day it rained. And by rained I mean the heavens well and truly opened – in August, just my luck. But it certainly didn’t stop us having an amazing day; we explored so much of the city, from the Louvre to the Artists Square. Read more to see my adventures…

I wasn't going to let the weather ruin my outfit choices, so went with my planned outfit, my Lavish Alice skirt and a vintage Calvin Klein tee and of course my beautiful new Ugg shoes. Flats were a must for the day I had planned! First stop was breakfast in a Café De La Comedie, tucked away on a corner by the Louvre. I find it so hard to resist stopping at every single Parisian café I see, they’re all so adorable with tables and wicker chairs outside, and I fell in love with this one especially. Inside the maroon-red walls were covered in an eclectic array of vintage photos and frames, with traditional French light shades and the teeniest iron spiral staircase – so much charm.
We then headed to the Louvre to be greeted with a ‘2 hour’ long queue in the rain. Not ideal. We somehow managed to get super lucky and joined a shorter queue in the shopping arcade below the museum, which then snaked back about 4 times the size once we’d got our tickets. If you’re visiting the Louvre make sure you take some ID, under 25’s actually get in for free on some days!
Once we were inside the prism, we made our way down even more spiral staircases and headed in to the first section. I know from reading parts of The Davincci Code that the Lourve is big, but you don’t quite appreciate how colossal it s in size until you’re inside. We were inside for a good 3 hours and barely covered a quarter of it. Bar taking a selfie with the Mona Lisa, my favourite part was an exhibition they had on the most beautiful old French interiors,  full of decadent furniture and ornaments, it was interior inspiration at it’s finest. The best room was a circular space with black and white marble tiled floors with huge pillars and soft pink ornaments symmetrically surrounding it, so obviously I couldn't resist doing a twirl or two (or three) in my Lavish Alice skirt. This then of course became a movement I couldn't stop doing for all of my photos that day.
For lunch we headed to my favourite vegan place, Café Pinson. I first discovered it with Lizzy during fashion week (at which time it was heaving) so was excited to try some more of their guilt-free delicious food. It was fortunately quite quiet so we managed to snag a beautiful window seat to enjoy our food, super salads and some incredible rice finished off with a dairy-free chocolate mousse that was so divine I can't even begin to describe it.
Next up was the Sacré-Cœur, an amazing white cathedral set high up on the hill in the 18th arrondissement. We walked up the hundreds of steps to get there, only to discover there was actually a cable car that could have given us a lift up when we got to the top! Typical, at least I burned off that chocolate mousse, and what was inside was well worth the walk. There was beautiful architecture and the whole ambience is incredibly haunting - in a good way. It's astonishing to think how much craftsmanship went into it so many hundreds of years ago. We lit candles for both my Grandads, then headed out to enjoy the view over Paris.
Before heading to the Artist's Square, we stopped at the fountains surrounding the Sacré-Cœur, I couldn't resist the serene backdrop for outfit photos. Our tummies were soon rumbling, so it was then off to find some food in the square. En route I picked up this gorgeous Navy fedora, I tried it on in one of the small boutiques and instantly fell in love - thanks mum for treating me to it. The swuare it's self is full of traditional French and Italian restaurants, surrounded by so many artists painting and drawing portraits. Some of the work I saw was truly incredible, and part of me wishes I had my portrait done - I had enough offers, I think they were all intrigued by my new hat! Although I did have my profile cut into black paper which was extremely impressive, you can just see it in one of photos above.
After a delicous dinner of Moules Mariniére with french fries and a bottle of Sauvignon, we grabbed an Uber back to our hotel feeling very content about our wonderful day.
