Borrowing From The Boys: How To Wear a Men's Watch

. November 18, 2015 .

By now the fashion world has evolved enough that men and women’s clothing are somewhat interchangeable. We ladies love to wear our guys’ Oxfords, and celebrities are slowly but surely introducing the idea of guys wearing dresses an accepted style (haven’t heard of Jaden Smith's prom outfit yet?). Ever since this crossover of gender roles in fashion has begun, it’s opened all kinds of doors for style savants and fashion risk-takers to take their looks to a whole new level and blur the lines on a daily basis.

One of the lesser-known style switch-ups for women has been the wearing of men’s watches. A couple years ago, ladies started to wear large, chunky watches—but they were made especially for women. Now, we’re skipping the female section and heading straight for the boys’. After all, what could be chunkier than a men’s watch? The key to wearing a men’s watch, though, is first finding one that fits. Taking links off is an obvious sizing technique, but you also need to make sure the watch’s face isn’t too much larger than the width of your wrist. Otherwise, it’s just overkill.

So how would a woman go about wearing an oversized men’s watch without overdoing it? Once you find a size suitable for your wrist, it’s then time to style it correctly. To keep a balance between the masculine detail of a large time piece and your own femininity, borrow from the boys like a pro with these simple styling tips.

Play With Proportions

Just like you do when wearing your boyfriend’s blazer and a pair of skinny jeans, it’s important to keep the same rule of thumb for your wrists and arms. If you’ve got a giant-faced watch on, make sure your sleeves don’t flare, but keep them tight so as to play with the eye’s focus. If everything is too big, you'll look like a child dressing up in her father's clothing.

Mix Materials

If you chose a classic, leather men’s watch, try not to match it too well. Lace is oppositely feminine and looks stunning paired next to a Daniel Wellington, like those featured in this collection. Surprisingly, mixing and matching materials is the way to make your outfit look put-together and intentional. Feel free to be liberal with dominantly girly looks.

Room For Two

Banana Republic’s Marissa Webb loves borrowing from the boys and suggests we all do the same while still holding onto our girly garments. Just like a boyfriend shirt should be worn with heels, Webb says, “Men’s watches get mixed in with my other bracelets.” Don’t be afraid to juxtapose two styles; it’s actually the key to gender crossover success!
