As part of my ongoing collaboration with Proactiv+, myself and a handful of other lovely influencers taking part in this project were invited to a gorgeous breakfast in London to meet each other, learn about the products and have an informative one-on-one consultation with a dermatologist.
Held at the beautiful Bronte London restaurant on the Strand, we were treated to a delicious two-course breakfast as we talked about the products. There to explain more about Proactiv+ and the different types of skin problems we suffer with was the lovely dermatologist, Dr. Laura Savage.
Learning what actually goes on beneath the surface of the skin and what causes the different kinds of annoying blemishes we suffer with was so interesting and definitely made me understand that squeezing and trying to get rid of them myself is not really the best option!
Here’s what I learned about different types of blemishes:
Comedones – the technical term for blackheads & whiteheads, these are blemishes in which a plug made from sebum and dead skin cells is visible inside a pore. A blackhead is when the plug enlarges a pore and a whitehead is when the pore is blocked by a thin covering of skin, but neither causes redness or irritation to the skin.
Papules and Pustules – the blemishes that occur when our body and immune system reacts to bacteria and trapped oil inside hair follicles – what we might typically call pimples. Papules are small to medium sized pink or red bumps that appear on the skin without a 'head' of sorts and are tender to the touch. Pustules usually have a yellow or white centre with a red base, usually caused by the build-up of bacteria and oil inside a pore, attracting white blood cells to fight the infection.
I was also lucky enough to have a one-on-one session with the dermatologist to discuss my specific concerns and which Proactiv+ products would be best for helping to improve my skin. We discovered that the types of blemishes I suffer from are mostly blackheads around my nose and papules around my forehead – the type of blemish that I definitely should not be squeezing!
Instead, Laura recommended I use the Proactiv+ Skin Purifying Mask not only as a weekly all over mask but as a targeting spot cream for these stubborn, individual blemishes. In addition to the 3-Step Core Stystem, she also recommended I use the Re-texturising Toner to help minimise pores on my nose, the Repairing Concealer to hide existing obvious blemishes and the Makeup Cleansing Wipes for my on-the-go lifestyle.
Since the breakfast, I've now been using these products for a little over a month and I'm so excited to share with you the progress my skin is making already – stay tuned for more in my next post!
